L'homme aux bras d'or | The Night of the Clown | DVD

French Movie | 2014 | Color

Jean-Marc Faillant, former university professor, became chief-applauder, following a very painful breakup. In a few years, he crossed all levels to the point of becoming the personal chief-applauder of Michel Drucker and of being invited by the RAI of Berlusconi. But a bad fall in a football match against the applause of M6 jeopardizes his career.

ABOUT:

A few years ago, the boss of a famous television channel had spoken of "available brain time" to justify the interest of broadcasting commercials on his antenna. Uproar, of course. But have we noticed a much more serious phenomenon? The non-competition of audience measurement. Why are all services in the world (telephony, tourism, energy) subject to competition, while audience figures are not. As if this famous "audience" (which conditions our lives even for those who do not have TV) were delivered by a higher force ... We suspect that TF1 has more audience than Arte, and that Cyril Hanouna more than a literary program. But are we so sure of the proportions? What if the gap isn't that big? Do we not manipulate the audience figures to tell us that stupidity is very popular and that therefore, why reject it?

With "The man with the golden arms," I approached it in a frankly funny way but in the end also very cynical. The epic of this former teacher at the Sorbonne who becomes "Michel Drucker's official auditorium driver" is a counter-ode to downgrading ... I had a lot of fun writing this 10 'monologue, facing the camera, which has been said to perfection by the extraordinary Luc GENTIL. I had spotted Luc in "Delphine 1, Yvan 0" by Dominique FARRUGIA, an anecdote which does not lack spice :) We shot in a house in Courdimanche, and the actor who plays the hero's doctor (who is broke his arm during a match against M6's applauders!) was actually my cat's vet ... During the shoot I was laughing so hard that I almost had to gag myself to be able to keep asking the questions to the hero. One of the lines of the film has become, for some, truly cult: "Football has given me everything, it has taken everything back from me ...". Luc GENTIL also had trouble saying the last sentence ("I met people on television much deeper than they seem") given the double meaning of the said sentence ... This film is also, unconsciously at the time, a tribute to a program that had marked me a lot: "Thank you Bernard". As we age, we sometimes reject the ingredients of our youth. But they come back without warning. The film's career has been strange: a lot of my friends didn't like the film. By adding a voice_off (said by Lisa OLIVIER) and with a new montage, "The man with the golden arms" has become a "festival beast", even if unfortunately, I could not propose it to the festivals of Clermont or Pantin, because of its false telefilm status ... It was nevertheless screened at the "Groland" festival in Toulouse, in the first part of the feature film "L'air de rien" by Grégory Magne and Stéphane Viard ...

To this day, I still haven't sent it to the real Michel Drucker, who is to our hero what Mozart is to Salieri. I can't wait to get his reaction ...
