SYNOPSIS:
Two sisters, separated by life and resentment, find themselves in the parking lot of a supermarket in the middle of the night, in the middle of a birthday party.
Director's note of intent:
If someone asks me why I make films, why I want to make them, I can't answer precisely and quickly. It is always difficult to express what comes from our depths, to justify what seems obvious, natural, and essential. If the Stars Grant Our Wishes undoubtedly comes from what I believe in: Our lives are like discontinuous lines, broken, and of which we ultimately only retain a few strong moments. Show the key moments of a relationship and make them collide in the eyes and hopes of the spectators. To retain only the essence of a night, during which the lives of Emma and Louise are affected, by the reality of a poorly expressed brotherly love. If the Stars Grant Our Wishes is like a buried memory, a reminiscence of one of those traumatic events that build each of us. Few elements are given to the spectator at the start of the film, the confrontation of the two characters takes place immediately and the spectator cannot cling to an exhibition scene which poses each in his role as he is wont to do or to make. The viewer is pushed in front of each situation because I trust him, in him, in his intelligence, and in his sensitivity, to apprehend each situation without respite and without any other data than what he sees.
In addition to this, you need to know more about it. What is most important to me is that the viewer feels the film according to his own experience, background and sensitivity. Trusting the intelligence of the viewer, allowing him the pleasure of making connections between what is shown to him, letting him experience the story as he is, that's what I want. If the Stars Grant Our Wishes appeals to these faculties which are in the possession of each spectator and which are too often forgotten by “locked” films, which underline each element for fear that the spectator is lost. I don't think the viewer needs to be held by the hand. In addition to this, you need to know more about it.
If the Stars Grant Our Wishes, is for me, a way to explore this idea of cinema, to continue to search, to try modestly to move away from the overly marked narrative, from the conventions of exhibition scenes, from the explanatory scenes. Trying to make a kind of "collage" of moments linked by associations of emotions, ideas or cut through ruptures. Of course, this experimentation conceals dangers and pitfalls that the film "advancing like a train in the night" cannot always avoid: But it is also slag, these blunders, these hesitations which make the research worthwhile. Soul of a movie. If the Stars Grant Our Wishes is that idea of cinema, and much more in what it says and what it says to each of us, like a little distant resonance.
